If
you decide to proceed in the UK only twelve months after filing the
original application, the cost of proceeding at this
stage will be based on the time involved in amending the
specification to include any improvements / modifications made to
the invention in the preceding year. Additionally, we are required
to prepare a set of claims and an abstract and to file a request for
a search including the search fee. Three to four months after
completion we would receive a Search Report from the UK Patent
Office. At eighteen months from the earliest priority date, the
patent application would be published unless withdrawn at your
request and within six months of publication, we would be required
to file a Request for Examination. The UK Patent Office Examiner
would then examine the application and issue an Examination Report
accepting or objecting to the application based on prior art
objections. The cost of responding to any objections will depend on
the type and number of objections raised by the Examiner. It can
take anywhere from two to four and a half years to obtain the grant
of a patent in the UK. Annual renewal fees must be paid to the UK
Patent Office to maintain a granted UK Patent in force.
